More School Records fall at State Meet

Sandpoint Track and Field completed their season this weekend in Boise at the State Championships. In all, there were 13 medals earned with top 6 placements.

On Friday evening, Sam Levora placed 2nd in the 3200 for the 2nd time, running a 9:36.83 in hot conditions. Mikhaela Woodward placed 6th and medaled, even while suffering through heat exhaustion through the last laps of the race. She ran an 11:49. Lily DeAragon ran a 1:01 in the 400 to earn 5th qualifying slot to the 400 finals. Kyle Perry earned the 6th slot in the 100 with an 11.42, Nathan Schwartz qualified for the 110 hurdles with a PR 15.78. Nicole Alamillo placed 3rd in the discus, and Grant Kennaly tied for 3rd in the high jump.

On Saturday, Rainey Woodward became a State Champion, placing first in the 800 with a new School Record time of 2:19.37. She took the lead early and unleashed a devastating kick to win by over 3 seconds. In the boys 800 Matt Burgstahler placed 5th, running a 1:57.7 and finishing his high school career as a two time state medalist in the event.

The 1600 meter races were also exciting, with both Sam Levora and Mikhaela Woodward placing 2nd. Sam went out hard, leading the race with Elijah Armstrong. With 2 laps to go they were at 2:05 and Sam dropped to second, finishing strong with a new School Record time of 4:16.51. It was a gutsy finish to a great career at SHS. Mikhaela Woodward refused to allow a slow pace in the girls 1600, taking the lead from the start and pushing the pace hard. By 1200 it was a 2 person race, and Pocatello’s Rachael McGovern took the lead and was able to hold it. Mikhaela ran a personal record 5:15.41 and moved to less than three seconds from the school record.

Lily DeAragon ran a :59.8 400 finals to earn 4th in the event, unleashing a devastating kick and making up over 8 meters to pass 2 girls and come within .2 of the 2nd and 3rd place competitors. Kyle Perry placed 6th overall in the 100 with and 11.29, Nathan Schwartz with 4th with a person record of 15.73 in the 110 hurdles, and Grant Kennaly tied for 6th in the pole vault.

The girls 4x400 team placed 4th, running a 4:10.19. Lily DeAragon ran a great 1:01 opening leg, and Lauren Orr powered through with a 1:02.5 second leg. During the second exchange a runner from Emmet stepped in from of Lauren and almost forced her off the track. The obstruction caused a 3 second loss, but Mikhaela ran a great 3rd leg at 61 to bring them back into 4th, and Rainey Woodward held off 2 runners at anchor to secure the 4th place run.

It was a great season, with 7 school record falling in 3 events, and amazing results throughout the year. Thank you to all athletes who participated and made this a successful year. The banquet will be on May 29th at 6pm in the SHS Commons.
