Sandpoint Boys Place 3rd in Battle of the 509, Girls 6th

The Sandpoint Cross Country team took a large step forward in the State rankings this weekend with a solid showing at the Battle for the 509 in Cheney Washington this weekend. There were 43 schools attending and 25 full teams, and the Boys Varsity was 3rd, Girls Varsity 6th, Girls JV 2nd and Boys JV 5th. On top of that, there were 36 personal records for the team.

The boys 3rd place finish put them just behind GSL powers Mead and Rogers, with all runners placing in the top 1/4 of the 191 finishers. They were lead by Nikolai Braedt's 8th place 15:52, which puts him #3 on School's All Time list, and just 4 seconds behind the school record set by Sam Levora in 2012. Jett Lucas was close behind in 12th place, running a 16:04 and moving up to #4 on the All Time list. Then came Gabe Christman (24th place, 16:26 #8 All Time), Keegan Nelson (29th place, 16:31 #10 All Time), Seth Graham (32nd place 16:36 #13 All Time), Trey Clark (43rd place, 16:55 #24 All Time) and Tyler McNamee (46th place, 17:01). The boys pack time was 16:18, beating the school record of 16:33 set last year.

In the girls varsity race, Sandpoint's 6th place finish put them ahead of league competition and moved them into the top 5 in State rankings. There were 138 girls in the Varsity race, and all 5 scorers were in the top 56. Paige Davidson was first in for the girls with a 20:20 for 33rd place. Bionce Vincent was right behind her in 34th place, running a 20:26 and moving to #25 of the All Time list. Next in was Megan Oulman (45th place, 20:58), then Ara Clark (21:19, 49th place), Maddie Morgan (21:33, 56th place), Kenzie Suhy-Gregoire (59th, 21:38) and Camille Neuder (7th place, 22:21). The girls pack time was a 20:55, improving from last years 21:14 on the same course.

The JV Girls team was 2nd in their race, and were lead by Jillian Primgaard in 5th place, who ran a 21:40. The rest of the top 5 was made up of Kora Converse (16th place in 22:48), Clara Cave (20th place in 22:55), Chloe Pierce (25th place in 23:20) and Lydia Nelsen (27th place in 23:26). There were 146 entries on the girls JV race.

The JV Boys race was the largest of the day with 303 finishers. Brady Nelsen was the first Sandpoint runner in, placing 5th in the race with a 17:14. He was followed by Ben Ricks (22nd place, 18:20), Slate Fragoso (31st place, 18:33), Riley McEvily (37th place, 18:44) and Dakota Wilson (60th place, 19:13).

The team has no meet next week, and will run again on October 5th at the Lewiston Inland Empire Classic.
